Everyone hates television commercials (TVCs) especially when they take a chunk of the runtime of your favourite programs, at the same time, everyone loves adverts that employ a good and memorable slice-of-life technique like the Maggi Monkor (Shrimp) ad back in the day.
The slice-of-life approach in advertising is a technique where a real-life problem is presented in a dramatic situation and the item being advertised becomes the solution to the problem, popular in Ghana and India.
One character in the TVC that made it a hit was the cute little girl who reiterated the ingredient to guests. As a former shopkeeper, I have witnessed other children run to my shop to buy the then-popular “Maggi Mo-on-ko” perfectly choreographed as little Kiana did on TV.
About seven years down the line, little Kiana has grown into a damsel who is continuing where she left off. She has been spotted in a new challenge with musician KiDi known as the “Monko Challenge.”
The new challenge is gradually gaining traction on social media and is suspected to be a new technique Nestlé Ghana is using to remind customers about its existence since almost everything today is fronted by a dance challenge.

In other news, some movie stars from India could not help but jump on it while on set with the most recent one being popular actor, Shabir Ahluwalia.
Shabir Ahluwalia played the role of ‘Abhi the Rockstar’ in a popular Indian telenovela aired in Ghana — Kumkum Bagya.
The actor was seen in a video jamming to ‘Touch It’ in a water body with other colleagues. KiDi reshared the video as the actor gave him a mention in the post.
